Paula D'Arcy

Contemplative Journal is honored to present Advent: a Pilgrimage of Anticipation, with internationally acclaimed speaker, writer, and retreat leader Paula D'Arcy.

Paula brings to her teaching an eloquence and expertise that can only come from one whose contemplative life is built upon authentic experience, practice, and vision.

When she was a young wife and mother, a drunk driver swerved into her path and took her husband and twenty-one-month-old daughter. Seriously injured in the crash and pregnant with her second child, Paula gave birth to a baby girl six months later.

In her words: "When the terrible darkness of grief lifted, I emerged deeply sensitized to all suffering. My life had been directly and forever altered by a force of great Love that moved even in the midst of considerable heartache and pain. Now I wanted to give back to the world in some way. I wanted others in need to know the power and reach of that Love."

Nearly forty years later, Paula has touched countless lives with her deeply personal spiritual teaching. Her books include Gift of the Red Bird: a Spiritual Encounter, which shares the story of Paula's vision quest and Song for Sarah: a Mother's Journey Through Grief and Beyond, a collection of letters written before and after her daughter's death, among many other inspiring spiritual books including A New Set of Eyes: Encountering the Hidden God, Seeking with All My Heart: Encountering God's Presence in Scripture and Literature, Sacred Threshold: Crossing the Inner Barrier to a Deeper Love, and Waking Up to This Day: Seeing the Beauty Right Before Us.

Paula continues to travel the world, offering retreats and speaking with a wide audience on topics related to spiritual transformation. Paula presently serves as adjunct faculty at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, Seton Cove in Austin, Texas, the summer Institute of Adult Spiritual Renewal held at Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois and The Living School, sponsored by Richard Rohr’s Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Paula is also the founder of the Red Bird Foundation, which ministers to people in prison, the disadvantaged, and to those in need of healing.

Advent: a Pilgrimage of Anticipation

Click to listen to our conversation with Paula.

Whether you enter this course with no knowledge of the concept of Advent or with great familiarity with the practices associated with the season, you will come away with a deeper sense of what it means to be a pilgrim on a path of anticipation.

The ancient roots of Advent involve the basic rhythms of the seasons, slowing down in the dark, cold winter months to invoke the return of the warmth and brightness of the summer sun. This course follows the same model of anticipation, but we won't rush the process.

Western culture tends to over-burden this season with the hustle and bustle of shopping malls, frantic ringing of Salvation Army bells, airports crammed with impatient travelers, and a hectic pace of holiday concerts and parties that can drain the life out of us, much less cultivate joy.

By enrolling in Advent: a Pilgrimage of Anticipation you'll be assured of a gentle daily reminder of the great opportunities for spiritual growth contained in the larger meaning of this season as you receive Paula's inspirational teaching and reflect on your own experience, insight, and wisdom.

The Course

This online course brings together the best of Paula D'Arcy's inspired writings with her down-to-earth teachings. Throughout the season of Advent, from Sunday, November 30th to Wednesday, December 24th, you will receive a daily message from Paula based on her well-loved devotionals Advent: a Time of Hope and Daybreaks: Daily Reflections for Advent and Christmas.

In these brief, poignant messages Paula teaches us how to look beyond the superficial and helps us train our eyes to see the deeper meaning of life. Paula walks alongside people of all faiths on a pilgrimage that is both traditional and progressive, encompassing not only the Christian practice of observing a time of preparation for the Feast of Christmas, but embracing the opportunity to explore the deeper meaning of the season from a variety of faith perspectives.

As we walk together toward the new year with great anticipation, taking time each day to read and reflect, we will come away with greater awareness and a deepened spiritual life.

Each week will build upon familiar themes in new ways as we light candles of hope, preparation, joy, and love. Spiritual ceremony and practice takes new shape as hearts gather together in this intimate online seminar.
